ONRFC was founded in 1923 by W.C.C.Cooke, who at that time was Headmaster of Northampton Grammar School. The aim was to give former pupils of the School the opportunity to play rugby when they left school.

All players were either pupils or ex pupils or masters of the School until the Club went open in the 70s. We still have very close links with the School which is now Northampton School for Boys and many of the current players were educated “over the road”.

Over the years since 1923 the Club has been very successful and produced many players who have gone on to play for the Northampton Saints and also for England at both Senior and Schoolboy level and at least two British Lions, including former RFU President R.B Bob Taylor.

The Northampton & District Alliance Cup was again won in 2004 and was retained for a record 13 seasons in succession before finally relinquishing to Tows in the 2018 final.

2009-10 saw promotion to Level 5 National 3 (Midlands), the highest ever for the club. The first season we finished a very creditable 8th, achieving a notable double over the eventual Champions Bromsgrove. However the second season was less successful, being relegated after a long hard battle. So in 2012-13 we returned to level 6 to battle it out in the very tough Midlands 2 (East) League finishing 4th,season 2013-14 3rd and then winning the play off game against Worcester Wanderers in 2014-15 to once again move into National 1 Midlands. . However, despite winning 9 games and earning 7 losing bonus points, the ONs finished in 12th place and were relegated back to level 6 where they play today.

After two earlier unsuccessful attempts the Mini and Junior Section was established in 1990 and from the 20 or so young lads at that time, this part of the Club has grown to over 350 registered players, and is now without doubt the leading Mini & Junior Section in the Region.

As the players moved through the age groups reaching ages 17 and 18, a Colts side was formed and over the past few years this team has dominated East Midlands Colts rugby. 2005-6 was probably one of the Colts most successful winning the Northampton Alliance Oceanic Cup, both the East Midlands Referees Cup & League, East Midlands Colts 7s and were losing finalists in the National Colts Knock Out Cup.

The ONRFC Academy was formed at the beginning of the 2009-10 Season in order to help the Player Pathway from Junior to Senior rugby. The first season proved to be remarkably successful with both the Under 19s Colts and Under 17s reaching their respective Finals of the National Plate competitions. In the 2010-11 season the Under 19s reached the last 32 of the National Competition then went even further last season being knocked out on the last play of the Cup Quarter Final. The Under 18s also in 2011-12 retained the East Midlands Referees Cup & Sevens trophies in 2011-12.The 2014-15 season saw the U18s winning the Oceanic Cup,the East Midlands League Cup,the Refs Cup and losing in the semi final of the National Colts Cup against eventual winners Tonbridge. The 2017-18 season was another very successful one for the U18s when they were defeated in the last 8 of the National Cup by a single point at Tynedale but won the Oceanic Trophy and both the Referees and League Cups.

The ONRFC Mini & Junior Section is the leading youth rugby section in the region, with over 350 registered players. The Mini Section caters for both boys and girls aged U6-U12 (school Year 1 to Year 7). The Junior Section accommodates boys aged U13-U16, and the ONRFC Academy U17–U18. The Girls Section has successful U13, U15 and U18 squads, providing continuity from the end of Mini rugby through to adult rugby.

ONRFC Mini & Juniors Section promotes the RFU Core Values – Respect, Teamwork, Enjoyment, Discipline, and Sportsmanship. Our extensive coaching team provides weekly rugby for players of all sizes and abilities, recognizing that children develop at different ages. Our goal is to ensure that each player can gain enjoyment and a lifelong love of the sport of rugby.

The ONRFC Mini and Junior Section was established in 1990 and later a Colts side was formed. Over the past few years this team has dominated East Midlands Colts rugby. 2005-6 was probably one of the Colts most successful season, winning the Northampton Alliance Oceanic Cup and both the East Midlands Referees Cup & League, East Midlands Colts 7s and were losing finalists in the National Colts Knock-out Cup.

In 2009 every age group from U7-U17 won at least one tournament with U9 and U11 winning at Twickenham. We continue to be a successful club with the U18 reaching the semi-finals of the National Colts Cup in 2013-14.

The ONRFC Academy was formed at the beginning of the 2009-10 Season in order to help the Player Pathway from Junior to senior rugby.

The first season proved to be remarkably successful with both the U19 Colts and U17 reaching their respective Finals of the National Plate competitions. In the 2010-11 seasons the U19 reached the last 32 of the National Competition then went even further last season being knocked out on the last play of the Cup Quarter Final. The U18 also in 2011-12 retained the East Midlands Referees Cup & Sevens trophies.

Many of the minis and juniors sides have won further individual silverware in recent years, ranging from League titles, to more Cup and Plate wins. Such strong youth achievements only serve to better Old Northamptonians senior rugby as the young player’s progress up the ladder of home grown talent. Many of our players have gone on to play for England youth squads.

Ladies Section

The ladies’ section was started in 2015/2016 as a brand-new chapter for the club. There were 15 players who began the journey for the ladies’ section. Taking on friendlies of which they won 8 out of the 9 fixtures scheduled. Starting their competitive journey in National Challenge level 2 it was clear to see that the ladies’ section was growing in development and strength, winning the league to be promoted into National Challenge 1. After some movement within the squad the team was relegated into National Challenge 2. This was a chance for the ladies to build, recruit and start a new campaign.

The playing season 2019-2020 was one of the strongest that the section has seen. Not only did the ladies go on to win the league and once again be promoted to National Challenge 1 – East (level 4), they lost the semi-final of the Alliance cup to Buckingham Swans, but not without playing some serious rugby! They made it to the semi-finals of the national plate competition as well as the semi-final of the East Midlands Cup, however, Covid-19 cut the season short and they were unable to finish their campaign.

Leading onto a very long pre-season that enabled the ladies to recruit huge numbers of new players over the lockdown, they now host a 1st XV and a development team which is a huge milestone for our club!

If you are interested in joining the ladies section please contact oldnorthamptoniansladiesrfc@gmail.com  or message us directly via our social media platforms.
